Use the Checklist Every Time, Not Just on the Big Jobs
If you're about to approve an oilfield services contract, you don't need another glossy company profile. You need a checklist. I've spent four years as a quality and compliance manager at a midsize E&P operator, reviewing more than 200 service tickets a year. In 2024, I rejected 11% of first deliveries because of calibration gaps, missing drift reports, or documentation errors. Not because the equipment was always bad—because the proof was missing.
This checklist was built around Schlumberger, now operating as SLB. It works for any major oilfield services provider, but it's especially useful if you're evaluating a company with a big name and an even bigger operational footprint.
Step 1: Match the Official Schlumberger Company Profile to Your Scope of Work
Here are the numbers you'll find in any Schlumberger company profile. Founded in 1926 by Conrad and Marcel Schlumberger, the company has grown into one of the largest oilfield services companies in the world. In its 2024 annual report (Source: SLB Annual Report, 2024), SLB reported revenue above $36 billion and operations in more than 120 countries. The service portfolio includes drilling, wireline logging, formation evaluation, completion, and production optimization.
Those facts are useful, but they don't tell you whether the local crew can support your specific well. I've seen operators pick a major service company because the profile looked complete, only to discover that the nearest local base didn't stock the right downhole tools or the specialist had to fly in from another district. A brand profile is not a service plan.
So check the scope of work against the actual local support. Ask: Which base will support this well? What equipment is staged there? Who is the accountable field service manager? If the answer requires three layers of approvals, that's a risk.
Step 2: Ask for the Schlumberger PIP Evidence
If you've never heard of Schlumberger PIP, you're not alone. I only learned it in the context of supplier quality reviews. In the product integrity program (PIP), Schlumberger has a system for tracking how equipment is designed, tested, qualified, and maintained. It's the internal quality gate for pressure tests, sensor calibrations, software revisions, and field failure reports.
Why should you care? Because a downhole tool that fails at 15,000 feet isn't a small problem. It can become a fishing job, a sidetrack, or a lost well. I always ask for PIP records before allowing a critical tool to run. The best service companies will provide them without delay.
What to check in a PIP record:
- Tool serial number matches the sticker on the physical tool.
- Last pressure test date is within the requalification interval.
- Calibration certificates are attached for every downhole sensor.
- Revision level matches the current service procedure.
If a service company can't produce this evidence, the brand name doesn't matter. The evidence is the brand.
Step 3: Run a Drift Check—and Take Care of the Drift Tool
Before you run casing, tubing, or a downhole assembly, you need to verify the internal diameter is clear. That's what a drift run does: a precision-machined drift mandrel passes through the pipe to ensure there are no restrictions, dents, or debris. API Spec 5CT requires drift testing for casing and tubing, so this is not an optional step.
What most people don't realize is that the drift tool itself needs maintenance. A worn or dented drift can give you a false pass, which is worse than no test at all.
How to take care of a drift tool
- Store it in a protective sleeve or case, not loose in the toolbox. A scrape on the gauge surface changes the measurement.
- Measure the outer diameter with a calibrated micrometer before each job. If it's below certified tolerance, don't use it.
- Never hammer a stuck drift out of a pipe. That deforms the tool and the pipe.
- Label the tool with a serial number and recertification date, and keep that certification in the service file.
A few years ago, I worked with a field engineer named Jones Jr. He caught a bad drift tool before I did. The paperwork said the tool was within spec. He measured it anyway and found it was 0.015 in. undersized. We rejected it, brought in a certified drift, and the pipe drifted clean. That one check probably saved us from a stuck string later.
Step 4: Walk Around the Wireline Truck Before It Goes to the Well
The wireline unit is where quality gaps become visible. You don't need to be a wireline engineer to do a useful walk-around. You just need to know what good looks like.
What I look for:
- Calibration stickers with current dates on every gauge and transducer.
- Cable condition at the drum: look for kinks, corrosion, birdcaging, or fresh repairs.
- Hydraulic leaks, especially around the pack-off and reel motor.
- Tool boxes that are organized enough to find a specific test tool without moving a pile of old parts.
One time, a pressure transducer had a calibration sticker that was 18 months out of date. The crew said it was still fine. Maybe it was. But 'maybe' is not a specification. We swapped it before the job, and the pressure data came back clean.
Step 5: Treat Documentation and Post-Job Records as Critical Equipment
Documentation is the least glamorous part of oilfield services, and it's usually the first thing to degrade under pressure. When the well is waiting, people sign records they haven't checked. That's how a tool with the wrong revision goes into the hole, or a torque report disappears after a string is already run.
To take care of a well, you have to take care of the records. In my team, missing torque reports are not acceptable. Missing drift records are not acceptable. An unreadable pressure test scan is not acceptable. We reject the full delivery and ask for a corrected package, even if it delays payment by a few days. That has a purpose: service companies respond to what gets enforced. If we let small gaps slide, the next job gets sloppier.
After the job, keep the complete package—service ticket, tool list, calibration records, pressure tests, and a signed tally sheet—for at least the life of the well plus one year. You may need it for the next workover, a failure investigation, or a regulatory audit.
Use the Checklist Every Time, Not Just on the Big Jobs
The biggest mistake I see is selective rigor. Teams do a complete inspection for a high-profile well, then skip drift checks and calibration dates on a routine workover. That's exactly when failures show up.
The question isn't 'Is Schlumberger reliable?' The question is 'Did this crew, on this well, provide evidence that the equipment is ready?' A company with a century of history earns a strong starting point. It doesn't earn a free pass.
And if a supplier tells you they can do everything, ask for specifics. I'd rather work with a team that says 'this isn't our strength, here's who does it better' than a generalist who overpromises. That kind of honesty is part of product integrity, too.
Schlumberger can deliver excellent oilfield services—I've seen it. But high quality only survives in the field if someone checks the details. That's the checklist. Use it.
